The situation

How is AI changing what our company is exposed to?

Two things changed at once, and most companies are only tracking one of them.

On the outside, the cost of a convincing attack fell. Phishing that used to be obvious is now written in your CFO's register. Voice cloning makes the callback verification you rely on worth less than it was. None of this is exotic and none of it requires a sophisticated attacker.

On the inside, your staff are pasting company material into tools nobody approved. Contracts, customer records, financials, source code. Usually for good reasons, usually with no idea where it lands.

Why the obvious answer usually fails

The common response is to block the tools. It does not work. The staff using them are doing so because the tools make their work faster, so blocking pushes the same behavior onto personal accounts and personal devices, where you cannot see it at all. You trade a visible problem for an invisible one.

The other common response is a training module. Training helps at the margin and fails against a good synthetic voice on a Friday afternoon. Controls that depend on a person being suspicious at the wrong moment are not controls.

How we work it

Find out what is already leaving

Before any policy, we establish what is actually being sent where. In most companies this is the first time anyone has looked, and the answer reshapes the priority list.

Give people a sanctioned path

An approved tool that is genuinely good enough, with the data handling settled, removes most of the shadow usage without a fight. Prohibition without an alternative is what creates the shadow usage.

Fix the verification, not the awareness

Payment changes, wire instructions, and credential resets get a verification step that does not rely on recognizing a voice or a writing style. This is a small number of specific process changes and it closes most of the realistic exposure.

Match the spend to the actual risk

Mid-market companies get sold enterprise security programs they cannot staff. We size the work to what you can sustain, because a control nobody maintains is worse than no control, since you believed in it.
